Application steps
Choose the right US visa type
Start by identifying the visa category that matches your purpose of travel — for tourism, family visit and short business the standard B1/B2 nonimmigrant visa covers both. Other categories: F/M (study), J (exchange), H/L (work), etc. Use the Visa Wizard tool on travel.state.gov and the US Embassy Amman Visas page to confirm the right category.
Complete the DS-160 online application
Go to the official DS-160 Consular Electronic Application Center, complete the form in English, and upload a recent (within 6 months) passport-style photo meeting B-Visa specifications. Choose the embassy where you will be interviewed (US Embassy Amman) — your appointment booking later is tied to this choice. Save the barcode on the confirmation page; it is required to book the interview.
Create an account on USTravelDocs and pay the MRV fee
Go to the USTravelDocs portal for Jordan, create an account and pay the MRV fee (USD 185 for B1/B2 since 2023; verify the current fee on the portal). The receipt unlocks interview booking. For full instructions on completing DS-160 see the DS-160 information page.
Book your visa interview
Inside your USTravelDocs account, book your nonimmigrant visa interview at the US Embassy in Amman. Wait times vary by season and visa class. Some categories (recent renewals, certain age groups) may qualify for an interview waiver — check the latest rules on the Embassy Visas page.
Attend the interview at the US Embassy in Amman
Attend the US Embassy in Amman at your scheduled time. Bring:
- Current passport plus any older passports.
- Printed DS-160 confirmation page.
- MRV fee receipt.
- A spare DS-160-compliant photo.
- A cover letter explaining your purpose and itinerary.
- Supporting documents (employment letter, bank statements, booking confirmations, etc.).
The interview is short (3–5 minutes); the consular officer typically decides on the spot.Wait for the decision and any administrative processing
If approved, the officer keeps your passport for issuance. If your case requires Administrative Processing, this can add several weeks. For B1/B2 from Jordan, the visa is typically issued for multiple entries and several years, depending on your file.
Receive your passport with the visa
Your passport with the visa sticker is returned via the courier service to the address registered on your USTravelDocs account, within days to weeks depending on demand. Before you travel, verify the visa data (name, number of entries, validity dates) and prepare your travel plan to present to a CBP officer at the US port of entry.
